What Is an 80 Lower and Where Can You Get One?
Posted by 1 Digital Media on Jul 6th 2021
If you’re in the market to build your own AR-15, then you have probably been shooting your whole life, know all the ins and outs of AR-15’s and AR-15 parts, and the difference between a stripped lower receiver and an 80 lower receiver. If you don’t know all the details about building an AR and all the parts that go along with it then chances are you might not know the difference between a stripped lower receiver and an 80 lower receiver. If this is the case, then you’ve come to the right place.
Let me start by first explaining what a stripped lower receiver is. If you’re building an AR-15 all on your own, then one of the decisions you need to make it whether to buy a stripped lower receiver or an 80% lower receiver. According to the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives), the lower receiver is the only part of the gun that is actually considered a firearm. A stripped lower receiver comes complete hollowed out in order to fit the necessary parts needed to finish building the firearm. In order to purchase a stripped lower receiver, the buyer needs to have an FFL (Federal Firearms License) and the lower receiver needs to be stamped with a serial number.
An 80% lower receiver, on the other hand, is a lower receiver that has not been hollowed out making it a partially complete lower receiver, thus calling it an 80% lower. This kind of receiver is legally NOT a firearm and needs the fire control group to be milled out in order to be used. An 80% lower does not require an FFL or a serial number (when used for personal use), but it is recommended to have both in case your firearm gets lost or stolen. It is also required that whoever buys the receiver and builds the firearm needs to do the milling themselves for this type of partially complete lower.
Now that you know a little bit about the difference between a stripped lower receiver and an 80% lower receiver, you might be wondering where you can buy one.
